RECIPIENT ANNOUNCED FOR 2009 INTERNATIONAL GAMERS AWARDS - HISTORICAL SIMULATIONS CATEGORY

The International Gamers Awards is extremely proud and excited to announce the recipients for the 2009 IGA (General Strategy category), a set of awards which recognizes outstanding strategy board games in several categories.

This year's recipient for the outstanding General Strategy game in the Multi-Player category is:

UNHAPPY KING CHARLES!

In the Historical Simulations category, the award goes to Unhappy King Charles, the creation of Charles Vasey and published by GMT Games.  Set in 1640s England, Unhappy King Charles! allows two players to decide whether Commons or Cavalier shall rule in England. Both seek to establish control over the country and of its economic structures. They seek not only to defeat their opponents in battle but also to seize control of the local government of England and Wales.  This is the first IGA for designer Charles Vasey, while GMT Games has earned the award numerous times.

The top 3 games at the nominations stage were Devil's Cauldron, Fields of Fire and Unhappy King Charles!, and they fill the top 3 places in this second, though the real battle is just between two of them.

11 members voted and so the target number of votes is 6.

The count of first preferences resulted:

4: Devil's Cauldron

3: Unhappy King Charles

1: Conflict of Heroes - Awakening the Bear, Espana '36, Fields of Fire, Red Dragon Rising.

Games are eliminated one at a time and when there is a tie at the bottom, I go first to earlier stages of the count and then to how well games fared at the nominations stage.  Of the four at the bottom, the ranking at this earlier stage (going from most to least popular) was FoF, CoH, RDR, E36.  So the last of these is the first to go and its vote switches to Devil's

Cauldron.  Red Dragon Rising goes next and its vote switches to Fields of Fire to give the position

5: Devil's Cauldron

3: Unhappy King Charles

2: Fields of Fire

1: Conflict of Heroes - Awakening the Bear.

The Conflict of Heroes vote switches to Unhappy King Charles, and the Fields of Fire votes then both do likewise to give the final position:

6: Unhappy King Charles

5: Devil's Cauldron

The winner is therefore UNHAPPY KING CHARLES!

RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2009 INTERNATIONAL GAMERS AWARDS - GENERAL STRATEGY CATEGORY

The International Gamers Awards is extremely proud and excited to announce the recipients for the 2009 IGA (General Strategy category), a set of awards which recognizes outstanding strategy board games in several categories.

This year's recipient for the outstanding General Strategy game in the Multi-Player category is:

LE HAVRE

In the Multi-Player category, the award goes to Le Havre, the creation of German designer Uwe Rosenberg and published by Lookout Games and Ystari Games.  Set in the enchanting French port of Le Havre, the game challenges players to properly manage their harbor by securing goods, converting these into resources, purchasing buildings, and shipping goods to other ports for handsome profits.  Le Havre is quite challenging, and the abundance of choices gives players wide latitude in pursuing their strategies.  The game has earned the IGA in the General Strategy, Multi-Player category, and marks the second IGA for designer Rosenberg and Lookout Games, who captured the award last year with Agricola.

This year's recipient for outstanding General Strategy game in the 2-Player category is:

DAY & NIGHT

In the 2-Player category, the award goes to Day & Night, a strategic game set in a fantasy world where Lady Day and Lady Night duel for the right to remain in their celestial palace.  Each player possesses a unique set of cards, and must play them wisely to gain the upper hand and thwart their opponent.  Day & Night is a beautifully illustrated game with original artwork.  The game is designed by Valentijn Eekels and released by Mystics. dl.  This is the first IGA for both Eekels and Mystics. dl.

* In order for a game to be eligible for the General Strategy category, a game must have been released from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009.

MULTI-PLAYER SECTION

The initial count of first preferences:

6: Le Havre
4: Automobile, Dominion
2: Battlestar Galactica
1: Diamonds Club, Space Alert, Steam

The games with no votes are eliminated.

Next to go is Diamonds Club, which was less well supported at
the nominations stage than either Space Alert or Steam.  Its
voter switches to Battlestar Galactica, which moves up to 3.

Steam is the next to go, followed by Space Alert.  Their votes
transfer to Dominion and Automobile, respectively.  This puts
both those games up to 5.

Battlestar Galactica is now alone in last place and so it is
the next to be eliminated.  Of the three votes released 1 goes
to Le Havre, 1 to Automobile and 1 to Dominion, giving the
position:

7: Le Havre
6: Automobile, Dominion

This time the tie-break at the bottom goes in favour of Dominion.
Of Automobile's 6 votes, 5 switch to Le Havre and 1 to Dominion,
which makes the final count:  Le Havre 12;  Dominion 7.

The winner is therefore LE HAVRE.

TWO-PLAYER SECTION
The initial count of first preferences:

4: Conflict of Heroes - Awakening the Bear
3: Die Sauelen der Erde
2: Day & Night, Kamisado
1: 2 de Mayo

2 de Mayo is eliminated and its vote switches to Day & Night,
which moves up to 3.

Kamisado goes next and both its votes also go to Day & Night,
which now moves into the lead on 5.
Die Sauelen der Erde is now in last place and is eliminated.
All 3 of its votes transfer to Day & Night to give a final score
of Day & Night 8; Conflict of Heroes - Awakening the Bear 4.

The winner is therefore DAY & NIGHT.
